We had our furnace/AC and hot water tank replaced by them a number of years ago and have had them provide annual inspections/maintenance since then. We are always impressed with whoever arrives at the door and receive first class service each visit. What size unit heater do I need?

There are a few different factors that you can use to determine how big a unit heater you need:

• The size of your space
• How well-insulated your space is
• How warm you want your space to get
• How quickly you need the space to heat up

Here in Winnipeg, it gets incredibly cold, so you’ll want a lot of heat—usually at least 20,000 BTUs for a space between 200 to 300 square feet. Our technicians will help you determine if you need more or less. 

How efficient are unit heaters?

Electric space heaters are 100% efficient due to their design—all of the electricity dedicated to heat turns into heat. Fuel heaters are less efficient because combustion creates water—but there are still some incredibly efficient units that can achieve 80% efficiency or higher. This isn’t as efficient as a high-efficiency furnace, but it’s still pretty impressive. 

Are unit heaters safe?

When they are properly installed, unit heaters are safe. Problems with unit heaters typically occur if they are improperly vented or not secured properly. Electric unit heaters are safer than their gas counterparts for this reason, but gas unit heaters are also very safe if they’re properly vented.
