What’s the difference between a hot water tank and a water heater?

Water heaters are devices that heat water for personal use. A hot water tank is one type of water heater. In a hot water tank, water is stored within a tank and periodically warmed by a burner. The other main type of water heater is a tankless water heater; in tankless water heaters, water is heated instantaneously as it passes through the water heater.

Should I get a tankless water heater?

Whether or not you should get a tankless water heater depends on a number of different factors, including the size of your household, what you use heated water for, and more.

There are two main advantages to tankless water heaters:

They’re more energy efficient than hot water tanks, which must constantly reheat water.
Water is heated instantaneously, so you’ll never run out of hot water.

The main disadvantage of tankless heaters is that they are more expensive to install. The second disadvantage is that this cost scales up when you need higher capacity. Test the temperature and pressure release (TPR) valve.
Inspect and replace the anode rod.
Flush the tank.

You can also insulate your pipes and insulate your hot water tank; doing so can help reduce your yearly energy costs and keep your water hotter for longer.
